As a painter, I have been working
on small 5” x 5” canvases. When they are displayed
together, they resemble a quilt-like pattern. I use acrylic gels,
enamels, and glitter to create compositions. The five senses are
triggered allowing the viewer to understand what it would look, smell,
feel, sound and taste like if able to walk through the surface.
For this project, I utilized my style of painting and a different
pallet for each “quilt square.” I started by copying
the image and cutting it in half. The image was then a perfect
square. I placed it under plastic and painted within the shapes
of the image. When the paint was dry, I peeled the paint from the
plastic and “quilted” them together on the t-shirt.
This was a different way of working for me and required a lot of
problem solving, but it has created a new way of thinking about
painting, as well as quilting.
