A soon-to-be retired English
teacher, I first picked up a needle after an in-service for art
teachers. Since then, making folk art quilts has been part of my
leisure time. I appliqué my pieces using an old-fashioned
blanket stitch found commonly in quilts of the 1930s and 40s.
Some pieces on my quilts are three-dimensional, created by making a
“cloth sandwich” out of two pieces of fabric with a layer
of batting in between (like the flower in the lower left corner of the
quilt). Once all the pieces are sewn to the body of the quilt,
it’s time to bead like crazy. If you look closely at this
quilt, you see tons o’ beads. Favorite subjects of fold art
quilts are flowers and angels, both of which I enjoy doing.
My pipe dream is one day to have a booth of folk art quilts at Summerfair!
